The Kingston District Council has issued a warm welcome to flood impacted visitors and others looking for coastal accommodation during the upcoming school holidays through an extension of its low-cost RV Park.
The park, which will offer up to six nights for just $60 until at least mid-February 2023, is set to use land adjacent the existing area and adjoining Maria Creek, to make way for anticipated visitors who may have otherwise holidayed along the flooding Murray River.
Chief executive Nat Traeger said the council experienced high demand because of the devastating Black Summer Bushfires in 2019/2020 when east coast holidays makers were displaced, and this time around was ready, willing and prepared for the latest disaster impacted communities to come looking for somewhere beautiful to stay.
“It is believed up to 50,000 additional visitors will flock to the Limestone Coast over coming weeks, seeking holiday and camping options,” she said.
“We have a welcoming council and community and if we can accommodate extra visitors, not only will it be of benefit to RV-goers, but there is also an economic injection straight into the arms of our local traders.
“Whilst we cannot offer much to our Riverland Council friends in terms of plant, equipment and other emergency resources, we can offer respite to their residents and visitors until such time as things return to normal for them.”
Deputy Mayor Cr Jeff Pope, who is currently acting in the role of Mayor until such time a supplementary election is held in March 2023 said council considered a report at its first meeting since the local government elections, and was quick to make the unanimous decision, including an increase in the allowable stay of up to six days.
“We have learnt from impacts of recent disasters that during busy holiday periods, we are a desirable destination for holiday makers, over and above the usual influx we experience at this time of year,” he said.
The extra space will remain in place for a trial period, with the council set to consider a report from Ms Traeger at its February meeting.
People intending to take up the offer will need to monitor the council’s Facebook page where daily updates of likely availability in the RV Park will be posted.
Due to the relaxed layout of the site, occupancy is by ticket sales only and no pre-booking is available.
The council has directed Ms Traeger to investigate suitable booking options for the RV Park so that pre-booking and a level of certainty can be made available in the future.
• Allows motor homes, caravans, camper vans, wicked vans and 4×4 campers, i.e. no swags or tents
• No facilities in the RV Park, but public toilets are immediately adjacent
• Situated right on the beach front, adjacent to the Lions Park and walking distance from all local stores.
