Track and field talent on the rise

It was perfect conditions on Friday night for our sixth Mount Gambier Little Athletics meet for season 2022/2023 as athlete registration numbers continue to rise, with 162 athletes currently competing in Little Athletics in Mount Gambier.

Three young athletes were awarded with new centre records achieved in recent weeks, with Layla Gamble breaking the Under 7 girls 50m record.

Layla completed the sprint in 9.13 seconds just sneaking across the finish line breaking the previous record of 9.40 seconds held by Sailor McCracken since 2018.

A 20-year record was also achieved by talented local athlete Hamish Gordon, who broke the record held by Stewart McLaughlin in the Under 13 boys shot-put from 2002.

A whopping 13.13m was thrown by Hamish to break the previous record of 12.99m and with the youngster continuing to work hard each week we can expect this will not be the only record he breaks this season.

The Under 14 male 1500m centre record held by Hunter Elliott in 2018 was broken by long distance runner Joshua Cameron by seven seconds, finishing in 5:07.60.

Josh is an exceptional athlete and definitely one to watch in the future of athletics.

The Under 16 females participated in the 800m, 100m, Triple Jump, 90m Hurdles and Javelin.

Bethany Izzard finished in first place for the night with a jump of 8.55m closely followed by Jena Jagger on 8.33m.

Jena displayed her talented athleticism by getting extremely close to a centre record held since 1983 in the 100m sprint in a time of 13.69 seconds.

Emily Lynch came out on top in the javelin throwing 10.15 metres.

In one of the larger age groups the Under 7 boys enjoyed the night practicing their javelin throw by using the vortex.

Other events completed were shot put, 100m sprint and 60m hurdles.

Harry Gordon with a throw of 4.13m in the shot put closely followed by Elliott Bickley and Hudson Clark and Casey Weedon both on 3.78m were not to far behind him.

The boys all pushed each other in the 100m in a very close 100m sprint with Elliott just finishing in front of Hudson and Joshua Badenoch and Ashtonn Adams and Casey Weedon were in a tight tussle till the end with both boys in a tie at the finish line.

In the 60m hurdles plenty of personal best times were recorded including athletes Roy Hodges and Lachie Jones which is fantastic to see the boys improving each week.
