Ask Edenhope owner-trainer Cap Abbott what possessed him to purchase a couple of 11-month-old youngsters by Unlawful Entry out of three-race Bendigo winner Proud Fantasy and he’s pretty quick to come up with an answer.

“Quite simple,” he said.

“Proud Fantasy is a daughter of Premier Fantasy and that’s what I try and look for on the dam’s side when selecting a pup.”

By Premier County out of Nifty Niamh, Premier Fantasy was the 2004 Irish Greyhound of the Year and from a breeding point of view has been highly successful in Australia.

Abbott said that Kerry Hawker and he had purchased a blue dog and a white and blue bitch from the litter that was whelped at Pyramid Hill in February 2019.

They now race as Cadillac Prince and Another Pick.

“Cadillac Prince has won eight races while Another Pick brought up her 13th overall win when successful at Tara Raceway last Thursday,” Abbott said. Contesting the Exchange Printers Stake (400 metres), she chased the consistent Glenville Rose until the home turn where she railed through to take the lead before running out a one length winner in 23.38 seconds.

This was Another Pick’s 10th win this year at the track and now has Abbott well-placed to take out his second Mount Gambier Greyhound of the Year title.

“Black Spring won the GOTY in 2019 and currently Another Pick has a handy six-point lead in this year’s title.

“There’s still three months to go but so far she has enjoyed a consistent year, having also run 12 minor placings at the track,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ben Boers trained Nitro Yap, a son of Nitro Burst and Lots Of Yap – who is by Premier Fantasy x Have A Yap – was another winner last Thursday to carry the Irish sire’s bloodline.

Nitro Yap was chasing his second consecutive 400 metres win, drawing box four in the Williams Crane Hire Stake.

This was a race that would not have been out of place at a Sunday Category 2 meeting such was the standard of the field.

And it was another big run from the 35 kilograms black dog.

Off the back he rounded up another last start winner in Jervois Boy before powering away to a 4½ lengths win in a quick 22.91 seconds.

But according to Boers, as far as Nitro Yap is concerned it’s been an up and down year with a sand burn injury sustained back in May restricting the dog’s racing.

“That pretty well kept him to racing once a month,” he said.

“Then he required three months off after sustaining a muscle injury.

“However, it would now appear that he’s shaken off the sand burn problem and hopefully we might be able to get down to some serious racing.”

The Portland-based Boers, who is looking to relocate with his family to the Mount Gambier area, said he would like to keep Nitro Yap racing behind the finish-on-lure at Tara Raceway.

“I think he’s better suited behind the finish-on-lure.

“And obviously that would work out well if we are able to secure housing in the district.”

Winner of the 2015 Mount Gambier Cup, and still the best story to come out of the 41 cups that have so far been run, Lots Of Yap whelped her second litter – two dogs and two bitches – in April this year.

“This being her final litter, we used Glen Gallon after a service to him had been part of the Mount Gambier Cup prize the year Lots Of Yap won the cup,” Boers said.

“The pups are now being reared at Compton by Tracie Price on a two-for-two basis.”

And Langhorne Creek trainer Tony Hinrichsen unleashed the fury at Tara Raceway when Devil Gate Fury and Major Tom Fury landed a double for the Worm Burner x Spring Leesa litter.

Devil Gate Fury led all the way in the Winning Post Supplies Maiden Stake (400 m), defeating litter sister Thieving Fury by 1¾ lengths in 24.13 seconds.

Mind you, a Hinrichsen quinella was not altogether surprising given that he supplied five of the six runners.

With two runners in the Swallow Drive Meats Stake (400 m), Hinrichsen also provided another litter quinella when Major Tom Fury led all the way to defeat Let’s Go Fury by 3¼ lengths in 23.63 seconds.

A nicely-bred daughter of Dyna Lachlan x Sera Bale, Spring Leesa joined Hinrichsen’s kennels after seven starts.

And she became another of the long-time trainer’s greyhounds to seemingly race forever – going around on a further 170 occasions for 21 wins and 47 minor placings.

Last month, Spring Leesa was mated for a second time, this time to kennelmate Filthy Phantom who is still racing.

Currently his race record stands at 249 starts for 25 wins and 86 minor placings.

It appears as though Filthy Phantom, who was whelped in April 2016, is only one start short of equalling Victorian greyhound Galloping Graham’s unconfirmed Australian record for the most number of race starts.
