East Gambier is well on its way to another victory over South Gambier this season after day one at Blue Lake Sports Park, with Doggies’ skipper Alex Hentschke scoring East Gambier’s first century of the season.
South Gambier got the first day of its round five match off to the right start winning the toss and sending the visitors into bat on a green surface, however the conditions favoured East Gambier as it made a mammoth total.
South’s decision to send the East batsmen in looked to have worked a treat early with East’s openers Aiden Creasey and James Sullivan heading back to the pavilion early.
Emerson Marks and Alex Hill worked on stabilising the innings after the early wickets and continued to tick over the scoreboard at the same time.
South Gambier finally broke the partnership in the 20th over before it became too damaging with Marks caught behind off the bowling of Jakob Opie.
Dion Stratford was unable to add any runs to the board before being dismissed and Hill followed four balls later for 23.
The three quick wickets had South Gambier back in an excellent position, but Ben Robinson and Alex Hentschke took the match back in East Gambier’s favour with a 50 run partnership.
However Robinson was out after a change in the bowling brought on Jed Sims who only needed three balls to see the back of Robinson for an important 20.
Connor Little came to the crease but did not join Hentschke for long, run out for 2.
Hentschke continued to score, and Marc Roberts also began batting freely as South Gambier searched desperately for the answer to Hentschke.
He cruised past 50 and continued on scoring freely against a tiring South attack.
Opie got the breakthrough of Roberts for 37 off 50 balls, but Hentschke remained.
A four first ball of the 70th over brought up an incredible tonne for the captain Hentschke, who then proceeded to hit two more fours in a row to take his score to 108.
The innings was brought to an end with a declaration from Hentschke after Liam Turley was run out for five.
The declaration gave East Gambier seven overs to do some damage before the end of the day’s play.
Opie and Sam Bradbrook would bat out the seven over with South Gambier finishing the day 0/12.
There is still a mighty task ahead of the Demons with 223 required thanks to an incredible Alex Hentschke century which now has East Gambier in a comfortable position.
