Unique store full of treasures

There is no other store in the South East quite like Jill’s Vintage, where many a special find can be had.

Selling clothing ranging anywhere from 100 years old to the newest pieces being around 40 years old, the Penola vintage store is unique to the region and full of treasures.

Store owner Jill Mooney opened the doors to Jill’s Vintage in Petticoat Lane 13 years ago and moved to her new location on the corner of Church Street and Riddoch Street last year.

The building is a National Trust building which was once the original Penola Post Office.

Those walking into Jill’s Vintage can expect to find a bright and colourful range of vintage clothing, collectibles, homewares, jewellery and Penola crochet artist Trevor Smith’s tea cosies.

Ms Mooney said she was lucky enough to be the only place in South Australia that sells Mr Smith’s work.

“I have always loved old things and I have always collected,” Ms Mooney said.

“I like to recycle and the clothes from back then were such good quality, that’s why they’re still around today.”

Jill’s Vintage is the perfect place for people to stop by and reminisce on old treasures from years gone by.

“Looking around, it reminds them of things they had they’d forgotten about and just brings back memories,” she said.

Ms Mooney said she obtained most of her vintage wares from people selling their pieces to her, but she would travel to antique fairs in Sydney several times a year.

The store attracts many tourists who wander through for a look at the many wonderful and unusual pieces during their stay.

Ms Mooney said musicians from events in Penola, such as the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival, enjoyed coming in to find their next outfit to wear on stage.

Ms Mooney said she loves running her vintage store.

“I get to meet so many interesting people,” she said.
