Five local Australian Defence Force veterans are preparing for a powerful 400km cycling journey through France to honour one of World War II’s most decorated heroes – Nancy Wake.
Led by Army veteran and reservist Liz Wheeler, the team will retrace the same historic route Nancy famously cycled in just 72 hours.
The ride will take place from May 1-9 over nine days, commemorating Nancy’s extraordinary courage and contributions throughout the war.
Known as the ‘White Mouse’ by the Gestapo, Nancy Wake worked as a spy for Britain’s Special Operations Executive. Her missions and crucial intelligence work made her one of the Gestapo’s most wanted.
Her story of resilience and bravery has inspired local Mount Gambier resident Liz and her fellow veterans to take on this journey, not only as a tribute, but also to raise funds for Military and Emergency Services Health Australia (MESHA).
MESHA, part of The Hospital Research Foundation Group, supports service members and their families through world-leading research and programs to support their health and wellbeing.
The women, in their 50s and 60s, have been training hard for this ride and will be raising funds while sharing Nancy’s inspiring story along the way.
“Nancy’s spirit and strength still resonates with us today,” Liz said.
“She saw injustice, and she took action. She repeatedly put herself in danger to fight for freedom. Her legacy deserves to be remembered and shared.”
Tapping into the same spirit of adventure they had when walking through the ADF recruiting doors 40 years ago, the team will use this same spirit throughout the ride while honouring Nancy’s legacy of courage and bravery.
Throughout the journey, they will engage with local French communities to share Nancy’s story and promote her legacy.
“This ride is our way of commemorating Nancy – and proving that a group of older women can still push boundaries and be part of something bigger than ourselves,” Liz said.
The group has a fundraising page and people can click here to donate.
