Vital Penola football vote on hold

No definite date has yet been announced for a vital meeting about the future of the Penola Football Netball Club.

The KNT Eagles have been wooed by the SANFL and Western Border to join a new-look competition in 2024.

Penola last played in the Western Border around 25 years ago.

It is understood that financial members, life members and players will be eligible to vote on whether Penola continues to play in the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara football and netball competitions.

Personnel associated with the Penola Football Netball Club have visited Western Border matches in recent weeks.

Repeated attempts have been made this week by The SE Voice to contact Penola officials for comment.

According to club insiders, a vote has been delayed by Penola as they are awaiting the direction to be taken by the Casterton Football Netball Club.

The Cats are looking to restructure the underage competitions of the Western Border next season.

The Victorian club is also said to be interested in joining the South West District Football League as it is contemplating the addition of junior grades in 2024.

South West District already comprises Coleraine and Heywood which formerly played in the Western Border.

The absence of junior grades has been a sticking point for success-starved Casterton which has won only two A Grade flags since the Western Border was formed in 1964.

A year ago, Casterton applied to join the Mid South East but was rebuffed by this league and the SANFL.

The South Australian Football Commission has repeatedly stated it will force a merger of the Western Border and Mid South East in 2024 unless there is a restructure of football in this region.
