War-time sacrifice remembered

Limestone Coast citizens will pause briefly on Thursday morning to honour wartime service and sacrifice.

It will be 103 years since the guns fell silent to mark the end of World War 1.

Most of the usual Remembrance Day arrangements staged by the RSL will apply in Millicent.

A service will commence at the Cross of Sacrifice at10.45am and a minute’s silence will be observed exactly at 11am.

The service will be conducted by Millicent RSL president Chris Mathias and sub-branch chaplain Pastor Paul Hales.

Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll will talk about one of the fallen soldiers whose name is recorded on the Cross of Sacrifice.

Millicent school students and representatives of local groups will lay wreaths.

As part of the Remembrance Day observation, the Millicent RSL has again erected a field of cross poppies at the Millicent Cross of Sacrifice to honour those local service personnel who have died in battle or since.

This was done on Sunday morning.

A community service will be held in Mount Gambier at Vansittart Park’s memorial at 10.40am.

Mount Gambier Community RSL president Bob Sandow urged people to gather at 10.30am for the traditional service.

Among the guests to address the ceremony will be Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin.

Mr Sandow said QR check ins were required and would be circulated by Lions Club volunteers.

Mr Sandow said he was expecting upwards of 1800 people to attend and mark the occasion.

“Afterwards there will be an informal get together at the RSL for a bit of fellowship,” he said.

Mr Sandow will also visit Mount Gambier High, Tenison Woods College and McDonald Park Primary schools on Thursday to speak to students about the importance of Remembrance Day.
