West Gambier brings heat in return round

South Gambier v West Gambier

West Gambier have put themselves in a good position to pick up another win as they took on South Gambier on Saturday at Marist Park.

The change of scenery for the game was prompted by some unwanted guests on Blue Lake Sports Park’s cricket ground, with Little Corellas destroying the surface.

The Roos began the day at the crease and set the tone for how they would dominate the match.

Openers Justin de Jong and Nuwan Gunawardana got the ball rolling with de Jong making 32 while Gunawardana contributed 12.

West continued to cause problems for the Dees with a 25 run stand from Jayden Prior and 12 runs from Jake Blackwell.

The Roos continued to build a big lead after a long innings from Bray Stephenson, who faced 64 balls to make 25.

At the bottom of the innings West had a good run boost as Jack Geddes delivered a great performance, making 38 off 72.

The Roos finished on a great score of 166.

South Gambier’s Robbie Drenthen had a solid innings with the ball, taking five wickets.

The Dees did not get off to the best of starts at the crease, with a golden duck from opener Noah Maxwell and 13 runs from Sam Bradbrook.

South continued to struggle as Kobi Maxwell was the only batter to get much going, finishing with 17.

Other than Maxwell and Bradbrook, South found itself under the pump with ducks from Elwood Geary, Jaggar Geary and Dean Harten.

After a tough day South will have a lot of work to do as Jared Kuhl and Robbie Drenthen will start at the crease on day two.

Penola v East Gambier

Penola and East Gambier will be in store for an exciting day two after a hard fought opening day clash on Saturday at McCorquindale Park in Penola.

The Doggies started the day well at the crease with Alex Hill and Ben Hentschke opening.

Both spent a fair time at the crease with the pair making a nice partnership with Hill contributing 26 and Hentschke chipping in with 19.

After the two openers were dismissed East struggled to get runs on the board despite facing plenty of balls.

Connor Little was able to make 10 runs after facing 66 balls while Emerson Marks faced 35 and only made six.

Down the list the Doggies continued to battle away to score, despite the time they spent at the crease.

Alex Hentschke finished on six after facing 26 while Craig Lynch made five off 27.

At the back end of the batting list East did not get many big scores with most finishing under 10 runs besides from Luke Patching who ended on 10.

Penola was able to get East all out on 116, with Lewis March starring with ball in hand, taking six wickets.

With a good score to chase down Penola struggled early on at the crease with Jack Mullan out for a duck after six balls.

After the shaky start Penola did well to settle and not concede too many wickets before the end of the day’s play.

East were able to take three wickets at the end of day one with Eli Hunter and Drew Clayfield starting at the crease.

Both built a solid innings with Hunter on five and Clayfield on 21.

Mil Lel v North Sportsmans

It was a slow scoring day at Frew Park on Saturday as Mil Lel and North Sportsmans faced off, and the game remains in anyone’s hands.

Mil Lel got away to a hot start which suited the weather for the day as Nick Walters spent a while at the crease, facing 81 balls and putting 22 on the board.

Will Rowland was another who started strong, scoring 24 runs.

Despite the weather, Mil Lel’s side began to cool down as they had back to back two run scorers in Tom Smith and Archer Virtanen.

Mil Lel were able to get back on track for a short time with Harry Hicks at the crease, with the youngster making a quick 11 off 19.

At the back end of the innings Boyd Millhouse was able to put a few more runs on the board, making 12 off 18 and helping Mil Lel to a total of 91.

The Tigers did not have an ideal innings start at the crease as openers Brad Robinson made two and Matthew Robinson just four.

The struggles continued after a two from Michael Johnston and a duck from Isaac Mulraney while captain Mitch Lewis put some runs on the board as he finished with 11.

At the bottom of North’s list they found some small success with Thomas Madigan and Scott Kenny both making 13.

Mil Lel’s bowling was a major part in the Tigers’ struggle as Jack Miller had a big innings, taking six wickets.

Mil Lel were able to get North all out for 86 runs.

Mil Lel were sent back into bat at the end of the day with Jarrod Sanders and Vaibhav Patel at the crease for four overs before stumps.
