West Gambier hosted Reidy Park in the fifth round of the Mount Gambier and Districts Tennis Association season with the visitors having to forfeit several games resulting in an 8-4 win for West.
Zayne Young got Reidy off to a good start with a comfortable 6-2 win over George White, giving his side early hopes of a win.
However West Gambier fought back to claim the next three singles, with Toby Stutley not dropping a game in his match against Ty Lang.
Madison Kelly eventually won a game back in Reidy Park’s favour beating Jessica Stutley in a tie breaker.
Emily Jolley and Sarah Brown’s match also needed a tie breaker to split the pair.
Brown proved too good on the day though, squeaking past Jolley to tie the score up 3-3.
Having a forfeit in the final singles game West Gambier entered the doubles matches with the advantage.
The first match was an incredibly tight affair with Reidy Park outlasting West Gambier in the third set to claim the win, 5-7, 6-4, 8-10.
The next two doubles were comfortable wins for West Gambier before two more forfeits from Reidy Park to finish the result.
West Gambier has now climbed to second on the ladder while Reidy remains in fourth.
Uniting fought off a strong Mount Gambier Tennis Club at Corriedale Park on Saturday to win 7-5.
The singles kicked off with Uniting’s Andrew Vandenhurk doing enough to beat Rowan Williamson 6-4.
Williamson was determined during the match but Vandenhurk proved too skilful and claimed the match for Uniting.
Mat Stark had little issue against Kobe Cole during their singles match beating the Uniting youngster 6-1.
Jace Maxwell and Will Cameron proved worthy opponents in their match up, but it was Maxwell’s day winning the match 6-4.
Another tight matchup resulted in a Mount Gambier win with William Le Cornu doing enough against a resilient Sam Batty winning 7-5.
Uniting was on track to claim the next two matches before Vanessa Maxwell retired giving Shae Delany the result.
A tie breaker was the difference in Jess Stewart’s match with Rylee Seidel with Uniting taking the points.
The doubles served up some close encounters, the first set in Vandenhurk’s and Cole’s match against Williamson and Stark did not go to plan for Uniting, losing 0-6 to the Mount Gambier duo.
The second set saw some fight from the Uniting players however Stark and Williamson were too good, claiming the second set 5-7.
Uniting got on a roll with Jace Maxwell and Batty proving too good on return service, beating Cameron and Le Cornu 7-5, 6-2.
Two 6-0 wins for Uniting saw it go ahead with one doubles match remaining.
Delany and Seidel claimed a consolation win in the final match, beating Maxwell and Stewart 6-3.
The loss sees Mount Gambier slip down the ladder to third with Uniting remaining first after five rounds.
Glencoe delivered Mount Schank a big defeat during round five as Glencoe hosted a 10-2 win.
Dylan Childs’ and Will Boston’s match was a comfortable victory for Glencoe with Childs beating Boston 6-2.
The next few singles matches were much closer affairs.
Oscar Geddes required a tie breaker to beat Tim Biggins, as did James Braun in his match against Brendan McInnes.
Braun’s win was the start of six consecutive wins for Glencoe as Hamish Gordon snuck past Alex Laube for a 6-4 victory.
Laura Edwards continued the matches going in Glencoe’s favour beating a resilient Abbey Hood 7-5.
In the doubles Childs and Biggins secured a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 win over Boston and Geddes.
McInnes and Laube showed some fight for Mount Schank in the next doubles match up.
The pair comfortably beat Braun and Gordon in the first set and then claimed the match in a tie breaker after a fight back from the Glencoe partnership.
Laura and Sarah Edwards combined well against Hood and Laube, the pair dropped just the two games to claim a 6-2 win, before Glencoe again won the final two doubles with some comfort.
Mount Schank has yet to claim a win this season and the loss sees the side drop further and further away from the ladder leaders.
In Division two only two games separated Mil Lel/Reidy and West Gambier Blue.
Mil Lel/ Reidy claimed the result winning two extra games after the sides could not be separated after 12 matches.
After Mil Lel/Reidy won the first three matches West Gambier Blue battled back into the contest.
Unfortunately it was not enough as Jessica Douglas’ and Aynslee Hayman’s 6-3 win in the final doubles match took the points for Mil Lel/Reidy.
Over at Malseed Park Suttontown/Glencoe did just enough to beat West Gambier Red.
Sam Auld claimed a win in a tie breaker to get his side off to a good start, as Suttontown/Glencoe went on to win the first four matches.
West Gambier Red had a strong run home claiming the last three matches but Suttontown/Glencoe had already done enough to claim the points, winning 5-7.
In Division three Uniting/Glencoe claimed the points over Suttontown after the contest finished on 6-6 it was games that proved the difference with Uniting/Glencoe winning 59 games to 54.
Mount Gambier had the upper hand against Glencoe at Mount Gambier Tennis club.
The sides played out some very close matches, however Mount Gambier found the way to get the job done 8-4.
Despite some wins in the singles and doubles by CJ Arnold and Brad Hann, Mil Lel was outclassed by Centrals who won 3-9.
Mitchell Van Riet was in good form claiming wins in the doubles and singles for Centrals as his side tightened its grip on the top of the ladder.
In the A Boys West Gambier beat Glencoe 4-2 with some even matches going West Gambier’s way early on.
Four games split the difference in the result between Mount Gambier Blue and Mount Schank/Mil Lel.
Mount Gambier Blue pushed the opposition at every chance with the side taking the result.
Uniting/Reidy were excellent on service in the match up with Mount Gambier White at Corriedale Park.
The hosts won 6-0 with comfortable matches being played out.
In the A Girls West Gambier claimed a 2-4 win in its visit to Olympic Park against Uniting/Reidy.
Claiming both the double rubbers proved the difference for West Gambier who now sits second on the ladder.
West/Mt Schank/Uniting secure its place on top of the ladder with a 2-4 win over Mil Lel/Uniting/Suttontown.
Jessica Douglas won the first singles match for Mil Lel/Uniting/Suttontown, but from there the opposition was in control.
Mil Lel/Uniting/Suttontown remains bottom of the ladder yet to register a win.
