Wet and wild weather claims speedway but locals still shine

The Australian Allstars 360 Sprintcars and the South Australian Modlite title rounds at Borderline Speedway was claimed by the weather gods last weekend.

In the lead up to the event the weather was looking great and track was being prepared for what would have been a great night of speedway action.

However, the call was made to cancel the event last Friday afternoon due to the ongoing rain and with the forecast for more wet weather over the next 24 hours, it was a call that had to be made and allowed those competitors that were travelling from far to make alternative arrangements.

Borderline Speedway will now look to run on Saturday, April 2 when the South Australian Super Sedan title, formula 500 state series, street stocks and junior sedans will be on show in what should be an action packed night of racing.

In other speedway news over the weekend locals Mitchell Broome and Kirby Hillyer contested the Australian Wingless sprint title at Murray Bridge speedway.

The preliminary night was all good for the local in Broome starting heat one in pole and coming home in first place.

He kept up the strong form in heat two where stormed home to second from sixth on the grid, before starting 12th in heat three before finishing in third place.

In the Preliminary A-main Broome was starting out of position four and gained one spot to come home in a very respectable third place.

With good points and great heat racing Broome was due to start out of position three in the A- main.

His Mount Gambier partner in crime Hillyer also had a good weekend in the putting in some great racing.

In his opening heat he started fourth, but went back one spot to fifth.

But his second heat Hillyer started passing a few cars to end up to sixth from ninth before motoring in to third in the final.

Despite the late charge he just missed out on the Preliminary A -main by one spot out of 81 nominated cars.

Disappointingly, the weather gods claimed another race with the Australian wingless title being called off due to the rain but Broome and Hellyer should be proud of their achievements of the weekend.
