Women contest Olympic Trophy

Alarge field of 38 ladies attended the Mount Gambier Golf Club last Wednesday to compete in the 1st round of the Olympic Trophy Stableford, sponsored by Limestone Holdings.

The Olympic Trophy competition is played over three rounds, consisting of one stableford, one stroke and lastly a par round and the player with the combined best score is then declared the Winner.

Fine, drizzly rain persisted on the day, however, that did not deter some ladies excelling in the golfing scores.

The best score of the day and continuing her “purple patch” was Janina Morrison’s 41 points, consisting of 6 three pointers and having a great 44 off the stick on the long Back Nine.

Janina recorded her best score ever having 90 off the stick and once again the Handicapper will be adjusting her Handicap.

Second placing in Division 1 went to Heather Barry who played one under her handicap to record 37 points.

Barry’s split was a very consistent 19/18 points with no wipe-outs registered.

In Division 2 a determined Jane Lamont had a great score of 38 points.

Lamont did not record a wipe-out on her card and her split for the day was 20/18 points.

Jane’s highlight came on the Par 3 8th Hole to have a Birdie, thus giving her a spectacular 5 points.

In the ball run-down balls were won by 9 players ranging from 36 points to 33 points.

In the Speciality prizes the Pro Shot on the Par 3 8th Hole went to Kate McCormick with a great shot.

Best front nine winners were: A Grade – Jan Shanahan, B Grade -Kate McCormick and C Grade -Jill Johnson.

On October 26 the format of the day will be a stroke round – the second roundd of the Olympic Trophy.

Last Saturday the unforgiving par round was the competition of the day and only 10 Ladies competed in the round on a fine but windy condition.

First place went to relative new golfer Jill Johnson (Handicap 35) who won on a three-way count-back with 2-.

Jill has a consistent game and her split for the day was 1-/1-.
