Women set for night spectacle

This week the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League’s second round will be held over two days.

The round will kick off tomorrow night at Vansittart Park with two matches, followed by another two on Sunday at Blue Lake Sports Park.

At 6.30pm tomorrow Millicent will play North Gambier in what should be a good contested game of football.

North is coming off a big win against Kalangadoo to the tune of 147 points while Millicent went down to Kongorong by 46 points.

Millicent will have been working hard this week on the track to fine tune and get their game plan up and running while North will be confident after their big win.

North has a lot of talented players and will be looking for Luca Roulstone, Chloe Perryman and Maddy Bonanno to lead, in conjunction with super boot of Alice Tentye who is coming off a seven goal haul in the opening round.

Millicent will need a 110% four quarter effort from Meredith Turner, Lilly Hately, Kelsie Cockrum and Alannah Pratt to get close to the roaring Tigers.

The second game will be Kalangadoo taking on Casterton Sandford with a starting time of 8.05pm under the lights.

Kalangadoo was held scoreless by North Gambier in the first round, while Casterton Sandford had a closer tussle against Kybybolite, taking the win by five points.

Both teams can play a good brand of football but are in the rebuilding stages with a lot of younger players and will need time to adjust.

They will have the benefit of having played at the ground last week and will be looking to use the wide wings of Vansittart Park.

This will be a remarkably close game and it will be the one to hang around for and watch.

Carlie Smith, Amelia Thomas, Chloe Finnegan and Zhane Crawford will have to be at their best for the Cats and Kalangadoo will look to Abby Thompson, Amanda Bowd, Jessica Stone and Kellie Wallace.

In the other games to be played on Sunday, South Gambier will take on Penola in the Eagles’ first hit out for the season, while South already has one game under its belt.

South had a big loss to Mundulla last round and will be looking to regain some confidence on home soil and play the Demons’ way, while Penola will be fit and firing on all cylinders.

The big wide spaces might wear both teams down, but they will need the mental strength to just keep running and carry the ball.

South has some young legs and the latter has already played this season in the under 16 competition and will know what it takes to get the four points.

Sunday’s second game will be a battle of the big cats, with Kybybolite taking on Mundulla at 12.35pm.

Mundulla is coming off a huge 168 point win against South Gambier and will be full of confidence although it was only the first game, but Kyby is capable of destroying any side on any day if they are on song and play their brand of possession football.

Kyby was last season’s premier and will want to get the four points on the board, but they will have to work extremely hard against a very strong team in Mundulla.

The Mundulla team has some incredibly talented and strong players and this game will come down to who wants the football most.

For Mundulla to win it will need the experience of Kelsie Hinge and Casey McElroy to lead from the front and have support from Kaylene Rowett up forward and Erin Horsnell, while Kyby will need Dellie Brown, Zara East, Jedah Huf and Taylor Ryan to perform at their best.
