Volunteers at the Haven are excitedly working on a banner to lead Mount Gambier’s first ever International Women’s Day march.
International Women’s Day is held annually on the March 8 and is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The day also makes a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
The Haven invites all community members to support their enthusiastic endeavours by joining them on the historic walk which will leave from Vansittart Park, gathering from 10.30am to head off at 11am.
The march will continue along Commercial Street to the Caves Gardens where the celebrations continue with a free sausage sizzle.
The march will be led by Lisa Anderson in her suitably decaled car, “Women Can.” Lisa is a leading advocate for promoting women in traditionally male dominated trades.
In addition, speakers at the Cave Gardens will use the occasion to reflect on the significance of the event.
The Haven provides information and referrals for women who are experiencing difficult circumstances but has a particular focus on women experiencing domestic violence.
International Women’s Day celebrates what can happen when the community works together.
The Haven is a free and confidential walk-in service for all women with no appointments necessary and operates at the Mount Gambier Library each weekday from 10am to 2pm
