Womens footy ready for first

Football fans can brace themselves for a historic weekend as the junior girls join the women for the first time on Sunday.

Blue Lake Sports Park will be the venue for the grand opening of the region’s maiden Under 16’s girls football competition.

The grand opening of the new competition will be an all-Tigers clash between North Gambier and Kybybolite.

Directly after the historic contest, South Gambier will run out on home turf hoping to emulate its successful senior side when it meets Kongorong.

Each junior game runs for just an hour, while the season provides young girls with a direct junior pathway into the sport they did not have before.

The senior competition rolls on and the third-round heads north to Kybybolite for some Friday night football.

Kyby will be bursting with excitement to put on a show in front of its home crowd after enjoying a weekend off and resumes its campaign against a confident Casterton Sandford.

The Cats scored their first win of the 2022 season against North Gambier last weekend in convincing style producing 19 scoring shots to zero.

However, Casterton Sandford coach Pete Hutchins hinted at the possibility of being unable to field a full-strength side due to the long journey to Kybybolite.

It will be a tall order for the Victorians to overcome the home side, which looked at full flight smashing Kongorong by 134 points in the opening round thanks to a bag of five from Sophie Henschke.

Penola and Mundulla are the other teams hitting the road to Kybybolite and will face off in what could be the match of the round.

The Eagles have established themselves as a team to watch after going two from two.

Penola was forced to fight hard for an opening-round win over Casterton before it showed its maximum firepower last week.

Angela Broad kicked seven majors to help the Eagles soar to a 115-point triumph over Kalangadoo.

Despite the dream start to the season, the competition will certainly take notice if Penola can topple powerhouse Kybybolite.

Senior proceedings at Blue Lake Sports Park on Sunday morning open with a battle between the Magpies and Hawks.

After battling through a woeful start to the season, this fixture provides both teams with a golden chance to score a maiden win and generate some much-needed confidence.

It could be the most desperate battle for the Sherrin seen all round.

Few will predict South Gambier to stop its steaming start to its title defence when it comes up against Millicent.

The Demons have been flawless so far and will hat-trick of home games to kick off the new year.

After South smashed Kongorong by 157 points, while the Saints suffered a bruising 163-0 defeat to Mundulla, it will take a miracle for the home team to be beaten.
