Young basketballers return from titles

Millicent North Primary School’s girls’ basketball team has recently returned from an 800km round trip to the SA Schoolsport titles in Adelaide with the runners-up pennant.

The team took on other schools from all over South Australia and dominated on the court for most of the competition.

Millicent North won every pool game to enter the grand final with confidence.

However, Sacred Heart College proved too strong in the hard-fought decider and won 19-11.

The Millicent team was coached by school support officer Olivia Wormald, who has also represented the Mount Gambier Pioneers.

Millicent North principal Graham Slarks said the school side had performed over a long period of time to reach the competition.

“Basketball is different in that it is a competition between schools and not an individual earning the right to represent the district,” he said.

“In recent times the school has won that right in 2018 and 2020 and won the state girls SAPSASA tournament two years ago.

“To get to the state titles requires winning in Millicent against local schools then going to Mount Gambier to compete against schools that had won their regional tournaments within the South East for the right to go to Adelaide to represent the South East region.”

Slarks said the team’s performance was well received by everyone at Millicent North.

“The school is extremely proud of the girls’ achievement,” he said.

“They also showed great sportsmanship on the day.”
