Young men seriously injured in shocking crash

Two men have been seriously injured after a single car crash at Mount Gambier over the weekend.

Just before midnight on Saturday a Range Rover travelling at high speed in an easterly direction on Bishop Road failed to negotiate a bend at the junction of Kennedy Avenue.

The car subsequently drove up a two metre embankment and through a fence before becoming airborne for about 20 metres.

The vehicle nose-dived into the ground before tumbling end on end and coming to rest.

The driver, a 25-year-old man and the passenger, a 22-year-old man, both from Mount Gambier, were extracted from the vehicle and taken to Mount Gambier Hospital where they were treated for serious but not life threatening injuries.

Officer in charge of Limestone Coast Local Service Area Superintendent Phil Hoff was amazed the pair survived.

“How no lives were lost in this crash is beyond me. Speed is an obvious factor and it appears the occupants were not wearing seat belts,” he said.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a suspected high-speed crash at Millicent on November 17 where the driver allegedly fled the scene.

Officers and CFS crews were called at around 2pm to a single vehicle rollover on Mount Gambier Road near the Banks Street junction.

Police believe a silver Suzuki Alto hatch was travelling south at high speed in the 60kph speed zone nearing the town’s southern limits before the crash.

The vehicle then skidded off the road and collided with the kerb, causing it to become airborne and land on its roof.

The woman who was driving, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was seen to exit the vehicle and run off.

The vehicle sustained significant damage and was towed to Mount Gambier for forensic testing and analysis.

Police are following positive lines of inquiry with regard to the identity of the driver and hold concerns for her welfare due to the impact of the crash.

She is asked to make contact with local police to confirm she is not suffering any injury and to assist police in resolving the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or the driving behaviour before the incident is asked to contact the Millicent Police Station.

Anyone with dash-cam footage that may have been travelling on the Mount Gambier Road in Millicent around 2pm on November 17 is asked to review their footage and contact police.
