COVID-related delay for major lodge bequest

There have been COVID-related delays in the official recognition of a major bequest to Millicent and District Hospital for use at its 60-bed attached Sheoak Lodge nursing home.

A former resident remembered the aged care facility in his will and the large sum is believed to be well into the five figures.

It has met the costs of a major refurbishment of the Sheoak Lodge common area.

There has been a fully functional kitchen installed along with new flooring, lighting, window furnishings, entertainment system and furniture.

The donor had formerly lived in the Millicent district and died a few years ago.

The hospital has decided to honour the bequest by naming the common area after the donor.

His bequest was first revealed to the public 12 months ago at the 2021 annual general meeting of the Millicent Health Advisory Council.

The SE Voice sought an update on the project when the 2022 annual general meeting was held recently.

In reply, Millicent Hospital executive officer/director of nursing Michelle de Wit said the official opening of the Sheoak Lodge had been delayed by COVID factors as well as a roof leak.

She said an official opening would be held in the near future after consultation with the donor’s family.

“Uncle Doug Nicholls from Kingston will perform a smoking ceremony,” she said.
