Adozen local drivers are revving up for the South Australian Street Stock Title this Saturday at the Borderline Speedway from 5pm.
The state title will be heavily contested by 62 competitors from every Australian state including newly crowned Australian Street Stock number one Nathan Thorne who beat out Mount Gambier’s Anthony Beare at the Western Speedway in Hamilton over the weekend to claim the top spot.
Thorne’s father originated from Penola and the young gun drove a Mitsubishi Magna to victory over the weekend against 120 other competitors to become one of the youngest winners of a National Street Stock Title.
Northern Territory number one Jason Duell from Mount Gambier and Western Australian number one Jake Hoath will look to add another notch to their belt on Saturday.
Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said there will be a competitive line-up of cars this weekend which will include current and former national champions.
“Out of the 12 local competitors, Steve Gartner has won a couple of state titles and been runner up in the national title and Jayden Edwards is always at the pointy end of the finals,” he said.
“Mark Jennings won his first Australian title in 1995, he has probably won three or four South Australian titles and he has been on the podium other times.
“We have a good spread of competitors in Mount Gambier and I am looking forward to a big weekend.”
Jennings said the Street Stocks would be supported by the Super Modified Sedans and Junior Sedans, which each have nine cars competing.
“Junior Sedans are where we foster those kids to go further in their field of speedway or motorsport,” he said.
“All the locals that have just started in the last 18 months in juniors are improving every week which is good to see.
“All in all, we will have 25-28 races.”
This weekend’s Junior Sedan competitors will include locals Jett Becker, Jayden Garner and third generation drivers and cousins Violet Thorne and Demi Jennings who finished second and third in their last race.
Bursons Auto Parts will make their car park available on Saturday from 9-12pm for a local junior motorsport car display, which will include the South East Automobile Club and the Borderline Speedway.
“People will want to get along and have a look what junior motorsport can give you,” Jennings said.
Last weekend in Portland, the Victorian State Title for Wingless Sprintcars saw Mount Gambier’s Mitch Broome take the top spot while local Kirby Hillier qualified but did not complete the final and Kahn Aston made it to the final.
Broome is also the Northern Territory number one for Wingless Sprintcars and will be looking to win the national title in Geelong over the April long weekend.
Penola’s Dave Gartner won the Western Australian Super Sedan State Title in Mount Barker, Western Australia last weekend.
Dave will look to secure the South Australian title at Murray Bridge in a few weeks’ time which he has claimed four times in the past.
