Sides battle for memorial shield

Senior men

International v Blue Lake

International got its revenge on Blue Lake as the blue and black came away with a one goal victory as both clubs battled it out on the weekend for the Lewis Ferguson Senior Memorial Shield.

The intensity was high from the opening kick off as both sides battled hard with the ball.

Inter capitalised early with their chances as Matt Bueti found the back of the net from a corner kick to give Inter a one goal lead early on.

After Bueti’s opener neither side could get a goal on the board as Inter went into half time with a one goal lead.

The defensive battle continued in the second half, again with neither side able to break through until half way through the stanza with Blue Lake’s Shar Nay Than finding the back of the net to equalise the game.

With scores now level Inter kept looking to score and claim the three points, not wanting to hand over the win after leading for most of the day.

Inter got a break late in the half when Sam Bueti scored to regain his side’s lead in the 89th minute.

With the game in hand and not much time remaining, Inter held off Blue Lake’s late charge as they claimed the three points in a thriller.

Blue Lake’s Eh Mwee Baw was awarded best on ground with Blue Lake coming away with the Shield, beating Inter with a five goal difference after all the games were drawn with four wins each way.

Inter defeated Blue Lake 2-1.

Gambier Centrals v Naracoorte United

Gambier Centrals are back on track after a big win over Naracoorte United.

Centrals came out the gates swinging as Lewis March scored the opener for Centrals in the first two minutes of the game.

Centrals’ Sam Shoemark began what would turn into an elite performance with an early hattrick to give Centrals a four goal lead early on in the half.

Teammate Alexander Obedi had his fun late in the first half with two goals with another Shoemark goal in between.

Ending the half strongly, March scored another for Centrals which gave them an eight goal lead at half time.

Naracoorte responded well in the second half as Daniel Owen scored the opening goal and prevented Centrals from keeping a clean sheet.

But Shoemark went right back to dominance as he scored another goal from a penalty.

Soon after Jake Blackwell brought the goal total to 10 for Centrals as they commanded the play with a nine goal lead.

To close out the game Shoemark made it 11 for Centrals as he scored his sixth goal for the day.

Centrals defeated Naracoorte United 11-1.

Centrals club president Shane Dycer said it was heartening to have a solid victory after some tough and unlucky weeks.

“We have had a pretty tough draw and a lot of injuries to contend with but we have slowly been getting a few back, I cannot remember having a run like this in a long time but it was good to get a week off to get a few bodies back and then putting a few balls in the back of the net,” he said.

After suffering an injury a few weeks back, Sam Shoemark was back at his best this week and Dycer was pleased to see him back to full health.

“Yesterday shows that he’s just about back to his best and he slotted six and was probably a little bit quiet in the second half and he could have got a few more,” Dycer said.

ANOTHER TOUGH DEFEAT: Isabella Morello and Inter fell short again on Sunday as they continue to search for their first win.

Senior women

Millicent United v Apollo

Apollo continued their dominant form as they headed to Millicent and picked up the three points with a win over United.

Early on Apollo showed their dominance as they scored an early goal through Deni Atkin to give them a one goal lead.

Late in the half Atkin added to her tally with another goal for Apollo to have them up by two goal right before the break.

Early in the second half Atkin capped off a great performance with another goal, sealing the hattrick and ultimately the win.

After Atkin’s hattrick neither side could find the back of the net as Apollo saw out the three goal victory.

Apollo defeated Millicent United 3-0.

International v Blue Lake

Blue Lake came away with a hard fought win over Inter on Sunday at Casadio Park.

Both sides had chances to take the lead in the first half but could not finish and the score remained nil-all for most of the half.

Late in the half Blue Lake broke through as Pip Crewe found the back of the net to give the Rangers a one goal lead.

In the second half Inter continued to defend well and had many chances on the attack to score but they just could not convert on their shots.

Late in the half Aimee Brooks put the dagger in the heart of Inter as she scored a great goal to give Blue Lake a two goal lead and seal the victory.

Blue Lake’s Chloe Lindquest was awarded best on ground for the match.

Blue Lake defeated Inter 2-0.

Gambier Centrals v Naracoorte United

Naracoorte was unable to field a side for Saturday’s clash against Gambier Centrals, with the side forfeiting the points.

Naracoorte will now prepare for its away clash against International at Casadio Park while Gambier Centrals will meet Apollo at home.
