Joint care centre a major step forward for Millicent

The potential for a joint aged care/childcare facility in Millicent continues to be probed by the elected and administrative leadership of Wattle Range Council.

The concept was canvassed by the council a few months ago and has the enthusiastic backing of Mayor Des Noll and chief executive Ben Gower.

“This is a major step forward for our community,” Mayor Noll said.

“It is an opportunity to develop a cutting-edge learning centre for both our elderly and young people into the future.

“I am looking forward to the next iteration of council’s strategic plan to drive this project even further.

“This may be the next biggest project for the community and Wattle Range Council.”

Local government in Millicent has provided childcare at the Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre for almost 45 years.

Mr Gower told the October monthly council meeting that Millicent had two aged care facilities: the not for profit Boneham Aged Care Services and the State Government’s Sheoak Lodge attached to Millicent and District Hospital.

“We can approach these potential partners and both have land available,” Mr Gower said.

“If the Mayor and I receive a positive response, we will come back to the chamber and ask for a small budget.

“This will allow us to develop some concept plans.”

Mr Gower said any joint aged care/childcare facility in Millicent would require Federal and State Government financial support and the probable involvement of private investors.
