An additional four disabled permit parking zones will provide closer access for those within the Mount Gambier Library precinct.
General Inspectorate team leader Derek Ferguson tabled a proposal for the additional parking zones when Mount Gambier City Council’s elected members met for its May monthly meeting.
“Community feedback has highlighted the difficulties faced by people with disabilities in finding accessible parking near our library,” he said.
“Given the number of patrons who require accessible parking, it is essential that we provide additional parking spaces to meet the demands of our diverse community and uphold our commitment to accessibility.”
The Sturt Street car park currently provides three disabled parking permit zones, along with 144 regular parking spaces, 11 council staff permit parking spaces, one Mayoral permit park, nine EV parking spaces, one ‘Sponsored Library Vehicle Only’ parking space and a Loading Zone.
“A plan is proposed to add four additional disabled permit parking zones on the northern side of the car park,” Mr Ferguson said.
To accommodate these new spaces, Mr Ferguson said the existing ‘Library Sponsored Vehicle’ parking spot will be removed.
He said the fourth new disabled permit parking zone will encroach 30 centimetres into the existing loading zone.
“Despite this, the loading zone will still have a sufficient length of over 6.5 metres, ensuring that it remains usable,” he said.
