Action-packed week on Attamurra course

The Mount Gambier Golf Club was a hive of activity last week with the Ladies Open Day and the seniors championship taking place in addition to the usual competitions.

The men’s Saturday stableford competition saw a host of impressive scores with new member MItchell Broome leading the way with 45 points.

It was only the 23-year-old’s second round on the course and scored excellent splits of 21 and 24 points headlined by a five-point bridie on the 10th.

Broome’s fast finish was decisive in a countback with Digger Richardson.

Those two 45-point scores were among seven of 40 or better on the day, with Gianni Giurastante claiming B grade honours with 42 on a count-back from Kent Comley.

Rob McIntyre posted 41 points to take out the A Grade by one point from Craig Foster, while Broome also claimed C Grade.

However, the biggest score of the week occurred in horrific weather conditions during the Thursday competition.

Todd Lewis compiled a staggering 47 points to win by eight from Bryce Whicker.

It was a case of history repeating itself in the 2020 seniors championship on Sunday with Andrew Stark and Faye Mainwaring taking out the men’s and women’s titles respectively.

The 54-year-old Stark repeated his 2016 victory with the same score of 76 off the stick, but he had to overcome a battle royale with Jeffrey Hodge, Trent Eitzen and Joe Clements, who also carded the same score.

The Mainwaring family continued its dominance of the women’s competition for a third consecutive year after Faye’s consistent round of 85 off the stick.

Mainwaring won by a single stroke from Kerry Pedler, while Heather Barry was third.

Members from Mount Gambier, Blue Lake, Naracoorte, Millicent and Port MacDonnell contested the Ladies Open Day.

Attamurra member Bernie Jennings was crowned South East Ladies Open Championship champion for 2020 with a top score of 92 off the stick.

She edged one stroke ahead Helen Gregory and Mary Winser, who were separated on count-back.

A four-way count-back determined the nett winner in A grade with Carol Davis the victor over Anne Headlam, Andrea Pegler and Heather Barry with 74.

A stableford competition was contested in the lower grades, with Betty McKechnie and Anne Schrapel the B and C Grade winners.

Blue Lake won the teams’ event courtesy of McKechnie, Headlam and Fiona Punton.

Last Wednesday’s stroke round was held in drizzly conditions and the Monthly Medal went to A Grade’s Helen McIntyre.

McIntyre carded 89/68, while Gregory was the runner-up on a count-back with Barry.
