All-female leadership sought for association

Robe Mayor Alison Nunan has been nominated by the neighbouring Wattle Range Council to be the next president of the Limestone Coast Local Government Association.

Wattle Range is seeking an unprecedented all-female leadership as it has nominated Kingston Mayor Kay Rasheed to be her deputy.

The unsolicited nominations were made at the monthly council meeting in Millicent. The name of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin was also put forward but was then withdrawn.

The three women are all first-term mayors. Ms Nunan lives on the family farming property at Bray and is active in community life. She is a player, umpire and life member of the Robe Netball Club and a past secretary of the Millicent Racing Club.

Her career in local government started when she filled a casual vacancy as a ward councillor in 2017 and she was elevated to the mayoralty the following year.

Ms Nunan has told The SE Voice she would not accept the nomination from Wattle Range Council. “It is a huge job,’ Ms Nunan said. “It was nice of them to think I was capable of doing the job.”

Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll made an unsuccessful bid to become association deputy president a year ago and did not accept another leadership nomination from his council this month.

The association leadership for the coming 12 months will be decided at the upcoming AGM.

It is currently led by Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery with Grant Mayor Richard Sage serving as the deputy president.

Both have filled these roles for a number of years.
