Apollo lands opening victory

Round 3 of the Barry Maney Premier League was another great round with lots of high quality and intense games throughout the South East.


Senior Men’s


Naracoorte United v Apollo


Apollo travelled to Naracoorte on Sunday and picked up a much-needed first win of the season.


In the first half both teams struggled to convert on shots at goal, but the game became heated in the 32nd minute when United’s Hossian Panahi was sent off with a red card.


The scoreline remained 0-all at half time and in the second half Naracoorte subbed Jonathon Thurlow for Ali Akbar Qalandari.


In the 54th minute Apollo’s Tobbei Kennett was booked with a yellow, but shortly after Kennett made up for his mistake by scoring a goal to give Apollo the lead in the 62nd minute.


After Apollo’s goal they did a good job at holding off Naracoorte for the remainder of the game to pick up their first win.


Apollo defeated Naracoorte United 1-0.


Gambier Centrals v Blue Lake


Gambier Centrals claimed the three points on Sunday as they secured a statement win over Blue Lake.


Blue Lake started strong in the first half as they dominated the play and in the 13th minute the Rangers’ Gay Nay Say Ler broke the deadlock with a goal.


Half way through the stanza Blue Lake struck again with a goal from Shar Nay Than, holding a half time lead of 2-0.


At the start of the second half Centrals made a double substitution, taking off Jake Stephenson and Brodey Koop for Alexander Obedi and Matthew Porter.


In the 51st minute Centrals’ comeback kicked off with a goal from Sam Shoemark to bring the game back to 2-1.


Centrals struck again in the 65th minute to tie the game, this time coming from Alexander Obedi.


Shortly after Obedi’s goal Blue Lake’s Meereh Htoo was sent off with a red card.


With a man down Blue Lake continued to fight hard but Centrals had all the momentum.


In the dying stages of the game Shoemark scored again to give Centrals the lead after being down 2-0.


Gambier Centrals’ Sam Shoemark had another amazing game, scoring two goals and the match winner.


Gambier Centrals defeated Blue Lake 3-2.


Senior Women’s


Naracoorte United v Apollo


Apollo headed to Naracoorte and smashed United to pick up another win.


The scoring spree kicked off in the fourth minute where Apollo’s Demi Ingley found the back of the net.


Five minutes later Deni Atkins scored one of her many goals for the day for Apollo, going on to score again in the 12th minute to make the score 3-0.


Atkins scored another goal to get the hat-trick in only 29 minutes of play and at half time Apollo held a comfortable 4-0 lead.


In the 43rd minute Apollo’s Alix Lescure netted a goal of her own to increase the lead to 5-0 before Toni Ingley-Smith joined in on the fun, scoring and getting Apollo to a six-goal lead.


United found a bit of success after they were awarded a penalty and Sophie Hole stepped up and scored to get Naracoorte on the board.


In the back end of the second half Lescure scored again, followed a minute later by Atkin who made it 8-1.


Lescure went on to kick another goal and claim a hat-trick in the 74th minute, before Atkin finished the game off with another to make it 10-1.


Apollo defeated Naracoorte United 10-1.


Gambier Centrals v Blue Lake


Gambier Centrals picked up another win as they took on Blue Lake on Saturday.


In the opening half both sides had chances to score but just could not convert, until late in the half Centrals’ Andi Corfield found the back of the net to put Centrals up just before half time.


Blue Lake responded well in the second half as they got themselves back into the game, and in the 43rd minute Ranger Pip Crewe scored to tie the game.


Centrals took another blow in the 50th minute after Blue Lake scored again, this time coming from Aimee Brooks.


However, right after Blue Lake’s two goals, Centrals bounced back as Isla Dickson scored to level the score.


Dickson proved a game changer for Centrals, scoring in the 65th minute Dickson to give Centrals the lead and ultimately the win.


Gambier Centrals defeated Blue Lake 3-2.
