Mount Gambier’s own Sam Mills donned number seven for Australia in the Virtus Global Games in Vichy France in Futsal (indoor
soccer).

Mills was one of 10 players representing Australia in the sport who were coached by Greg Brown and Trudy Bartlett.

Mills said walking out to represent his country was emotional especially for the first time against Spain in which he scored the team’s inaugural goal.

“It was a good feeling when you walk out and listen to everything like people applauding you when you come out, it’s amazing,” he said.

“I was a bit emotional because you’re playing for Australia and it’s like this is actually happening.

“We all got around each other and sang the national anthem out and it was pretty emotional.

“I scored my first goal for Australia and I was very emotional, I saw Dad have a few tears and I had a few tears.”

The team played France once and Spain and Portugal twice during the competition.

“We lost every game unfortunately but we gave it our all,” he said.

Mills scored for a second time in the final game against Spain which was a playoff for the bronze medal.

Portugal and France battled it out for the gold with Portugal defeating France 7-3 to be crowned champions.
