Battle continues for final top four ladder position

Round 14 of the Mount Gambier and Districts Tennis Association wrapped up on Saturday and the battle for the final spot in the top four for Division 1 is still up for grabs with plenty of close games that helped determine who will play in finals.

Division 1: The top three sides in Division 1 sit comfortably with one round left while Glencoe closed the gap on Mount Gambier with a close win that brings it within three points of Mount Gambier, with the two sides concluding this battle this week as they will play each other.

West Gambier v Mount Schank

In the men’s top doubles, West Gambier’s Brady Cook and Shaunn Robinson took on Mount Schank’s Will Boston and Brendan McInnes.

The West boys started off hot, as they took the first set easily 6-0.

In the second set Boston and McInnes began to work themselves into the game as they improved on their first set form.

However, Cook and Robinson were too strong as they claimed the set and the victory 6-3.

In the men’s bottom doubles West Gambier’s Toby Stutley and Pattrick Robinson faced Mount Schank’s Alex Laube and Jack Meyer.

West got off to a good start which made it hard for Laube and Meyer to bounce back as Stutley and Robinson took the first set 6-1.

In the second set the West boys continued their great form from the first set to close it out 6-1.

In the ladies doubles Mount Schank’s Bella Laube and Lucy Savage took on West Gambier’s Jess Stutley and Emiley Jolley.

Jolley and Stutley were no match for Laube and Savage as the West girls claimed the set 6-2.

In the men’s top singles Brady Cook took on Will Boston.

Boston could not keep up with Brady, only getting a couple games as Brady finished the day with a 6-2 win.

Braden McInnes and Shaunn Robinson had a singles match that went down to the wire.

The two traded games back and forth with the game decided in a tiebreaker.

Robinson came out on top and finished the day undefeated.

Alex Laube and Toby Stutley faced off in their singles match.

Stutley kept his form from the doubles as he made it hard for Laube to build any momentum.

Stutley came away with the set 6-2.

In the bottom singles Jack Meyer took on Pattrick Robinson.

Robinson started off hot and did not cool down as Meyer struggled to keep up.

Robinson took home the win 6-2.

In the ladies top singles Bella Laube and Jess Stutley faced off.

Stutley was too strong for Laube as she claimed the set 6-0.

Lucy Savage and Emily Jolley finished off the ladies sets for the afternoon.

Jolley was too good for Savage as she finished undefeated for the day with a 6-1 win.

West Gambier defeated Mount Schank 12-0

With this easy win over Mount Schank, West Gambier stayed in second place.

West has found some great form in the back half of the season which it will need to keep up as it is highly likely that it will play Reidy Park in the semi finals.

Reidy Park V Uniting

In the men’s top doubles Reidy’s Zayne Young and Dane Heemskerk took on Uniting’s Andrew van den Hurk and Kobe Cole.

The Reidy boys got off to a hot start, claiming the first set 6-2.

In the second set van den Hurk and Cole made the job a bit harder for Young and Heemskerk as they took the set to a tiebreaker.

However, Young and Heemskerk were determined to close out the game and did so, winning the match in straight sets.

Reidy’s Ben Gaffney and Ty Lang took on Uniting’s Jace Maxwell and Daniel Moon in an exciting match.

The first set was very competitive with Gaffney and Lang edging out the first set 6-4 to take the lead.

In the second set the roles were swapped as Maxwell and Moon bounced back and equalised the match, taking the set 6-4.

In the super tiebreaker Maxwell and Moon continued to build on their momentum from the second set and stole the match.

In the ladies top doubles Reidy’s Bailey Young and Maggie Collins faced Tessa Megaw and Alison Telford.

Young and Collins kept the game competitive but Megaw and Telford were too strong, winning the match 6-3.

In the next ladies doubles Reidy’s Bailey Young and Sarah Brown took on Uniting’s Tessa Megaw and Jade Delaney.

Young and Brown took a few games from Megaw and Delaney but the Uniting pair was too good, taking the match 6-3.

In the bottom ladies doubles Maggie Collins and Sarah Brown faced Vanessa Maxwell and Jade Delaney.

Collins and Brown improved from their previous games as they came home with the set 6-1 and claimed the only set for Reidy in the ladies doubles.

In the men’s top singles Zayne Young took on Andrew van den Hurk. van den Hurk continued his elite form since losing his only singles for the season back in round 11 as he defeated Young 6-1.

Dane Heemskerk faced Jace Maxwell in their singles match.

Heemskerk was too strong for Maxwell as Heemskerk claimed the set for Uniting 6-2 and finished the day undefeated.

Ben Gaffney and Kobe Cole had a competitive match in their singles.

Gaffney and Cole traded games with one another but Gaffney pulled ahead and took the match with a close 6-4 victory.

Daniel Moon had a great win over Ty Lang in their singles match.

Moon kept his form from the doubles and came away with a swift 6-0 victory.

In the ladies top singles Bailey Young and Alison Telford had an exciting and close match.

No one could build a convincing lead during the match but Telford was able to edge out the win with a close 7-5 victory.

Maggie Collins and Vanessa Maxwell faced off in their singles match.

Collins came out hot, building a strong lead early, making it hard for Maxwell to catch up.

Collins was too strong and took home the set with a 6-1 win.

Jade Delaney took on Sarah Brown in the bottom singles match.

Delaney was on a mission as she took control of the match and got Uniting another set for the day with a 6-1 victory.

Uniting defeated Reidy Park 7-5.

This win keeps Uniting safely atop the ladder with Reidy staying firm in third.

This has been the most sets Uniting has dropped since playing second placed West Gambier in round 8.

Could this be a worry for Uniting come finals?

Mount Gambier V Glencoe

In the men’s top doubles Mount Gambier’s Will Cameron and Will Le Cornu faced Glencoe’s Dylan Childs and Tim Biggins.

In the first set Childs and Biggins got off to a hot start, taking it 6-2.

In the second set Cameron and Le Cornu could not keep up with the experience of Childs and Biggins as they closed out the match 6-2.

In the men’s bottom doubles Mount Gambier’s Hayden Hancock and Tyler Hannigan took on Glencoe’s James Braun and Will Hann.

In the first set Braun and Hann could only take a few games off Hancock and Hannigan as they claimed the first set 6-3.

In the second set Hancock and Hannigan followed on from their first set success taking the match with a 6-2 victory.

In the ladies top doubles Mount Gambier’s Alita Huyser and Giaan Ferguson faced Glencoe’s Sarah and Laura Edwards.

The Edwards sisters came away with the hard fought match with a 6-3 victory.

In the next ladies doubles Mount Gambier’s Alita Huyser and Shae Delaney took on Glencoe’s Sarah Edwards and Alice Tentye.

Edwards and Tentye were too strong for Huyser and Delaney, winning the match 6-2.

In the bottom ladies doubles Giaan Ferguson and Shae Delaney took on Laura Edwards and Alice Tentye.

Edwards and Tentye came away with the set with a 6-1 win, sealing the clean sweep for Glencoe in the ladies doubles.

In the men’s top singles Dylan Childs took on Will Cameron.

Childs continued his form from the doubles as he took down Cameron 6-1.

Childs is now undefeated in the new year in singles.

In the next men’s singles match Tim Biggins faced Will Le Cornu.

Le Cornu bounced back from his doubles match and took down Biggins in a 6-2 victory.

Hayden Hancock took on James Braun in his singles match.

Braun kept the game competitive but could not match Hancock as he took home the set with a 6-4 win.

In the bottom men’s singles match Tyler Hannigan faced Will Hann.

Hann could only take a few games off Hannigan before Hannigan closed out his undefeated day with a 6-3 victory.

In the ladies top singles Alita Huyser took on Sarah Edwards.

The game went back and forth with no one building a strong lead.

It took Huyser deep into the match to break away from Edwards and claim the set with a 7-5 victory.

Laura Edwards played Giaan Ferguson in their singles match.

Ferguson did not stand a chance as Edwards got off to a hot start and never looked back, coming away with a 6-0 victory.

In the bottom singles Shae Delaney came away with the win over Alice Tentye.

Delaney improved from her two doubles matches as she claimed victory, 6-1.

Both sides finished the day on six sets with Glencoe coming away with the victory in games, defeating Mount Gambier – 62 games to 54.

With this win over Mount Gambier, Glencoe is still in the hunt for the final spot in the top four as it still trails Gambier but only by three points.

Glencoe will have to hope Gambier does not win many sets next week as it plays top side Uniting with Glencoe facing Mount Schank in the final round.

After round 14 Uniting remained first on the ladder with 203 points with West Gambier behind on 160.

Reidy Park has a safe spot in third with 131 points with Mount Gambier still in the hot seat in fourth on 107 points.

Glencoe is still chasing Gambier in fifth with 104 points with Mount Schank last on 12 points.

Division 2: n round 14 of Division 2 West Gambier Blue had the bye.

Mount Schank/Mount Gambier took on Suttontown/Glencoe with Suttontown/Glencoe coming away with the win 11-1.

Mil Lel/Reidy Park played West Gambier Red with West Red winning 7-5.

Suttontown/Glencoe remained first with 169.5 points with West Gambier Red moving up to second with 149 points.

West Gambier Blue falls to third and is right behind West Red with 142 points with Mil Lel/Reidy in fourth place on 120.5 points.

Mount Schank/Mount Gambier remains last on 84 points.

Division 3: In round 14 of Division 3 Moorak had the bye.

Uniting/Glencoe defeated Suttontown 8-4.

Mount Gambier defeated Glencoe on games 56-54 and Mil Lel defeated Centrals on games 48 to 39.

Finals are set for Division 3 with the top four teams Mount Gambier, Centrals, Uniting/Glencoe and Glencoe all locked in.
