Beach speed locked down

The grace period for speeding motorists on South Australian beaches has now ended and offenders face fines of up to $1734 as well as the loss of several demerit points.

The maximum speed limit dropped from 100kph to just 40km at the beginning of December.

Vehicles are further restricted to only 25kph when persons are present on the beach.

As of last Thursday hefty fines will be imposed on those who flaunt the new road rules.

Senior Sergeant Rick Errington, officer-in-charge of Milicent police, said motorists can expect to see additional police patrols on beaches and the officers will be equipped with hand held laser speed detection equipment.

He said the education phase about the revised limits would continue.
