Beachport blessing

Beachport blessing

The annual Blessing of the Fleet at Beachport will be held on September 30 ahead of the start of the second month of the 2023/24 lobster fishing season.

Father Peter Zwanns of the Mount Gambier/Millicent Catholic Parish will lead the mid-afternoon service at the foreshore war memorial rotunda.

It will follow the pattern of previous years and hundreds are expected to attend.

The jumping off the jetty to retrieve the blessed cross will go ahead and access is expected to be made available by the maintenance crews to the general public.

Around 20 professional lobster vessels have Beachport as their home port and the majority of the skippers and crew are expected to steam past the jetty and receive a blessing from Father Peter.

The seaside ceremony dates back decades and is organised by the Beachport Professional Fishermen’s Association in association with the churches of Beachport.

Similar religious ceremonies are held at Robe and other coastal communities across the nation at around this time of the year.

Meanwhile, the long-running Beachport Street market with dozens of stalls will be held along a closed Railway Terrace earlier in the day.
