Beachport fun in sun

Beachport came alive over the weekend with locals and tourists flocking to the seaside town for events including the annual duck race and summer market.

A delay to the start of the race allowed late entries to be made, with more than 1000 ducks landing on the waters of the lake.

All eyes were on the mock paddle-steamer which released the ducks from the middle of the lake, with vantage points for spectators along the finish line at the foreshore, lake jetty and the scenic drive.

Boat captain Roger Smith attempted to create ripples to get the colourful ducklings moving toward the finish line, but the little plastic novelties were not eager to disperse.

Local identity Ralph Adamo has been a past live commentator and was again an entertaining addition to the running of the event.

There was no sign of mother duck this year to enthusiastically coax the ducklings toward the finish line.

However, loud encouraging cheers could be heard from around the edge of the lake coercing the plastic ducks.

Bobbing their way up and down the boat-generated ripples to the finish line this year it was yellow duck number 621 first over the line.

Young Lottie Crase (pictured below) took home the grand prize thanks to event sponsors Mini Jumbuk and DiGiorgio Wines.

Kylah Carruthers’ duckling floated along the man-made waves to claim second place, followed by Rhys Fishwick’s entry in third place.

Eight prizes were up for grabs with other placegetters including Damien Green (4th), Hannah Walker (5th), Adalynn Hann (6th), Oscar Slape (7th), and Clover (8th).

A barbecue served up by the Beachport Lions Club and amplified music added to the atmosphere.

Supported by the Beachport District Development Association (BDDA) the sale of the ducks at $5 a head has been a major fundraiser for the past 22 years.

Other sponsors included Millicent Toy Kingdom, Annette and Trevor Oakley, Heather Burdon, Beachport Coastal Stayz and By the Sea Holiday Rentals.

Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club assisted in running the event patrolling the water to ensure the safety of swimmers.

At the end of the event children swarmed to the finish line to take home a duck as a souvenir of the day.

As in the past, the BDDA staged the ever-popular summer market earlier in the day, attracting a bustling crowd.

Tourists and locals were still in abundance when the market was scheduled to close at 2pm.

Stall holders took advantage of the strong crowd with many opting to remain set up longer than anticipated.

A fundraising initiative of the BDDA, funds raised support various Beachport community projects.

Street markets are also held by the association over the Easter and October long weekends.
