Bird strike sparks
coastal grass fire

Country Fire Service volunteers spent hours extinguishing a grass fire at Reedy Creek, near Kingston.

The crews were alerted to the blaze just before midnight on Friday.

Thirteen fire trucks and 50 volunteers attended the fire, working through the night supported by farm fire units.

The blaze, which was started by a bird flying into powerlines, burned through 96 hectares.

Crews managed to contain the blaze, which had 200 hay bales at the centre of the large fireground and remained on scene for hours until it was safe to leave.
