Bistro tees up fire service funds

The Blue Lake Bar and Bistro hosted a ‘Day on the Greens’ event on Sunday to raise money for volunteer CFS brigades who saved the establishment from the Crater Lakes fire.

Manager and owner of the Blue Lake Bar and Bistro Bill Burley said the event was sold out after receiving much support from the community.

“We were overwhelmed by the amount of people that turned up,” Mr Burley said.

“The support was amazing.”

Attendees enjoyed live music from local band Suburban Henry, a pop-up bar and woodfire pizzas.

Mr Burley said 90 pizzas were sold with bases donated Port MacDonnell’s Bay Pizzaria.

More than $3000 was raised on Sunday but there is still a whole month of fundraising ahead.

The club is hosting a fully-booked trivia night on Friday and an Ambrose Golf Day on February 27 which is also close to being sold out, with all proceeds going to the CFS.

Mr Burley said many local businesses donated raffle prizes and other items for events and they had already raised $10,000.

Mr Burley said supporting the CFS brigades who saved their establishment was a ‘no-brainer’ and said it was fantastic to see so many people at the event supporting the volunteer organisation.

“They choose to do it and I think it’s just amazing,” Mr Burley said.

“They leave their work and they leave their families to come and fight a fire.

“They risk what they have to come and save what we have got, it’s pretty special.”

Flames from the Crater Lakes fire burned to within 100 metres of the clubhouse and fire crews conducted a backburn to prevent the fire from reaching the establishment.

“There’s a lot of history in clubs and items that cannot be replaced,” Mr Burley said.

“The best part that came out of it was no lives were lost and no one was hurt. To think it was so close, it was very eerie, I don’t think I’ll forget January 25 for a long time.

“The community has been good to us, the nice words that have been said. Thank you to everyone for supporting our event.”
