The Borderline Speedway season will be off and racing this Saturday night after a delayed start to the season with the first event of the year being rained out.
The season was scheduled to get under way on November the 25, but rain meant the action-packed opening night had to be cancelled.
Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said he was hoping for a better result for the upcoming event.
“Unfortunately it rained and we missed our opening night, but we’re hoping the weather will be kind on December 9 and we can get a show on the road,” Jennings said.
The Borderline Speedway season will now kick off with the Ti Bills Wingless Sprints, a state series set to attract 45 competitors.
“We’ll have some good competitors there, the state champion Tyson Martin will be here competing, as well as some hard chargers of our own here Kirby Hillyer, Mitchell Broome and Kahn Aston,” Jennings said.
Aston will also be sponsoring the night as well as competing.
“He has put some prize money up which can be hard to come by sometimes,” Jennings said.
Other classes racing on the night will be the Southern Street Stocks Series which will feature racers from Hamilton, Portland and even Whyalla.
Jennings said the race had received 31 nominations, which was a strong number for the event.
“Getting 30 to 35 competitors in any class is good numbers which is helpful when you’re trying to put on a good show,” Jennings said.
The Street Stocks will feature three Merrett brothers from Penola, giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about.
Cameron, Mark and Scott Merrett will all compete against each other.
“It will be really interesting to see these young drivers in their Commodores try to beat each other,” Jennings said.
Also competing on the night will the Junior Sedans which will give the crowd a chance to cast their eyes over some young up and comers.
The competitors range in age 10 to 17, with nine set to race in an event for the youngsters to gain some experience.
“Unfortunately the Victorian Junior Sedan title is the same weekend so it will mostly be locals,” Jennings said.
James Becker will be one such local competing.
“He’s only had one race meet and he’s only 10, he’ll get some laps in his Hyundai and he’ll enjoy that and the experience,” Jennings said.
“Violet Thorne is another local competitor and Jayden Garner who has only started racing this season, but by all words has been getting around the track well.”
Gates will open from 4pm with the racing action to begin at 5pm, with children under 12 admitted for free.
