Mother Nature again made her presence felt during the weekend’s 2023 Easter Sprintcar Trail, with rain washing out Friday and Saturday night’s main events.
The trail kicked off at Avalon Speedway near Geelong on Friday evening with minimal rainfall in the lead up to the start of racing and during the action.
However, as the preliminary rounds finished ahead of the feature races the rain started to fall, prompting officials to abandon racing due to safety concerns.
Officials kept a keen eye on Saturday’s weather with Borderline Speedway officials declaring that morning everything was in place for a good night of racing for the second night of the trail.
After some solid track preparation, it was time for the sprintcars to circulate and with a small field of 25 cars it was decided to run two rounds of heats with eight laps.
The drivers were up against it, battling the greasy track which made it hard for them to reach top speed.
Attention then turned to the Super Rods to save the day, with the drivers heading onto the track to try to work it back in, along with the late models which did their best to get some laps in and restore the track to a condition fit for racing.
However, the heavens opened again and forced the track action to grind to a halt.
The Borderline track crew tried to work miracles with the help of the Super Rods, forcing officials to declare it was unsafe to race for the sprintcars to hit the track.
The Super Rods and late models again tackled the track until the call was made by the late models to abandon racing, leaving only the Super Rods to race.
They managed to put on a good show for the crowd, despite a huge crash from Gerrad Mabit.
