There was a strong response in Millicent to a call-out for women and girls to try their hand at AFL.

The Millicent Football Netball Club’s Women’s Football side together with Hatherleigh Football Netball Club’s junior girls football team had welcomed all interested girls and women to a ‘come and try’ session at McLaughlin Park on Wednesday night.

Millicent Football Netball Club women’s football representative Meg Tilley said the session was open to females of all ages and abilities.

“We were very pleased to have almost 30 girls of varying ages out to come and try on Wednesday night,” she said.

“We have had some great feedback.

“The girls enjoyed a fantastic skills session facilitated by talented local Ella Little and everyone – even some of the more experienced players – would have come away having learned something new.

“It was certainly a valuable exercise for our club and we look forward to seeing some new faces come pre-season.”

She said the organisers were grateful to Woolworths for donating sausages, bread and sauce.

The facilitator was well qualified to lead the session.

Ms Little was drafted by the Melbourne Football Club in 2022, but has yet to make her AFL debut.

Her first game of Aussie Rules was as a seven-year-old with the junior colts’ boys at the Mount Burr United Football Club where her father Jamie was an A Grade premiership player.

The 20-year-old has subsequently played with Millicent, Morphettville Park and Woodville West Torrens.

The utility player hopes to overcome injury in the coming months and return to elite competition in the capital city over summer.

In the meantime, she is working full-time across all year levels as a school support officer at Kangaroo Inn Area School.
