The Limestone Coast cricketing fraternity has paid tribute to one its long-time supporters, following the death of Gavin Hogg.
Hogg was a champion cricketer for Merbein South Cricket Club in the Sunrayasia Cricket Association and Penola Cricket Club in the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Penola Cricket Club, which joined the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association for the 1983/84 season.
His cricketing highlights included playing for Vic Country against the West Indies.
Hogg holds the club record highest score for Penola in the Barber Shield of 222.
He played in Barber Shield premierships with Penola in the 1988/89 and 1989/90 seasons.
A Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association spokesman said Hogg’s contribution to cricket extended far beyond his playing abilities, particularly with his generosity via sponsorship and coaching.
“Gavin’s company, Hoggies Wines, have been the major naming rights sponsor of the MGDCA for the last six seasons, a contribution the association is extremely grateful for,” the spokesman said.
“Hoggie was also instrumental in the formation of the Penola Sports Club at McCorquindale Park.
“Penola Cricket Club moved from its home ground at John Knox to McCorquindale Park in 1990 and the club remains very proud of this facility to this day.
“Thank you for everything Hoggie, we’re going to miss you greatly and our thoughts are with your family. RIP.”
