City blaze claims life

Aman has died in a house fire in Mount Gambier on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to a home in McIntosh Street just before 6am on Sunday.

Three MFS crews and a CFS appliance arrived to find smoke and flames billowing from a single story duplex, taking 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Once entry could be gained to the property crews found the body of a person inside, while a second occupant managed to escape without injury.

The fire damaged a gas meter, with neighbouring premises evacuated.

Sadly a man, yet to be formally identified, was located deceased inside the premises.

Fire cause investigators attended the scene and determined the fire to be non-suspicious.

Damage has been estimated at $150,000.

Limestone Coast CIB detectives and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

In other police news, a man has died following a fatal crash at Carpenter Rocks late on Thursday evening.

About 11.30pm emergency services were called to the intersection of Pelican Point Road and Carpenter Rocks Road after a car that had been travelling north left the road and crashed into scrub.

Sadly, the driver and sole occupant, a 52-year-old local man, died at the scene.

Major Crash officers flew to the scene early on Friday morning to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
