City orchestra to return

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is set to end a 40-year absence from Millicent next month.

The state’s elite musical ensemble last took to the stage of the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre in mid-1983 when classical pianist Lance Dossor was the feature performer.

It is understood the orchestra will be presenting a day-time schools-only performance at this venue in late February as part of a South East regional tour.

Meanwhile, the orchestra will present Sounds from the Blue Lake at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in Mount Gambier on the evening of February 24.

The players will perform Dvorak’s Carnival Overture and Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto.

At the heart of the program are Millicent High School’s Turn of the Lone Wanderer and St Martins Lutheran College’s homage to the Blue Lake, Deep Blue.

These works were developed collaboratively with composers Adam Page and Hilary Kleinig as part of the orchestra 2020 Silos and Symphonies initiative.

The night will conclude with Strauss’ famous Blue Danube waltz and Dvorak’s Symphony no. 9.

Members of the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra will also make a feature, with a pre-concert performance in the Helpmann Theatre courtyard.
