City RSL marks century of support

The Mount Gambier and Community RSL recently held a luncheon to celebrate the 106th anniversary of the organisation which is the oldest RSL in South Australian and the only one open seven days a week.

The occasion was attended by around 65 people including newly appointed RSL South Australia president Dave Petersen and a speaker from the Plympton Veterans Centre attended the occasion.

Another special guest was World War II Veteran Isobel Phillips who cut a cake to celebrate her 99th birthday the following day.

The Plympton Veterans Centre runs a wellbeing and advocacy service out of the Mount Gambier and Community RSL.

Mount Gambier and Community RSL president Bob Sandow said the local services offered by the Plympton Veterans Centre will likely double in size.

“The future looks pretty good for the veterans that we are putting now through the Plympton Veterans Centre,” he said.

“If you’re not open you cannot have fellowship with the Veterans, and we do not want our Veterans to go away and isolate.

“We want them into the RSL with their peers and then respect each other and look after each other.

“It was a lovely day and the Women’s Auxiliary prepared the day magnificently.”
