Clear winner heads field

Agood field of 89 players contested the Mount Gambier Golf Club’s Thursday stableford competition.

For a change there was a clear winner on the day, with Matthew Dixon (12) continuing his winning way from the previous Saturday.

Dixon’s good form has seen his handicap reduced over the last few weeks.

He fired a one over the card 37 off the stick to amass 23 points on the front nine.

A birdie on the first hole, seven pars and two bogies made a mockery of his 12 handicap.

He continued well on the back nine until an unfortunate double bogey on the fifteenth, before adding another 17 points and signing for a total of 40 points.

Three points back was runner up Levi Morton (14) with 37 points.

Morton also found the outward nine easier, racking up 20 points which also included a birdie on the first hole.

His inward nine started well until Attamurra’s version of Augusta Nationals “Amen corner” – the 12th, 13th and 14th holes.

While parring the 12th for three points, double bogies on both the 13th and 14th holes put paid to any thought of a win.

Four other players were able to play to their handicaps by scoring 36 points, including Stacy Fiegert (7), Peppi Pace (13), Jim Douglas (35) and Tim McClean (13).

A low 32 points or better on a countback was required to win one of the 17 balls handed out on the day and pro shot winners were Paul Kenny (11) on the eighth and Daryl Taylor (13) on the 16th.

Taylor must like the 16th hole, as this was the second week in a row that he has claimed the pro shot on it.
