The Dick McIntyre Memorial Oval at Beachport is set to be absorbed into the surrounding golf course.
Cricket has not been played at this venue for several years as the Beachport/Furner Cricket Club has been in recess.
When cricket was played there, the oval would overlap one of the fairways parallel to Adelaide Road and white balls and red balls were prevalent.
Its name honours the Beachport cricketer who was playing the sport well into his 50s.
He was regarded as a brilliant cover fieldsman and hard-hitting batsman.
One of Mr McIntyre’s notable accomplishments during his working life in the 1950s was to assist landowner Murray McCourt in the construction of the Woakwine Cutting at Thornlea.
Mr McIntyre died in 1996 at the age of 61 and is buried at Millicent.
Wattle Range Council is seeking community feedback on an application from the Beachport Golf Club to vary its existing lease to include the Dick McIntyre Memorial Oval.
The current lease costs $50 per annum and expires in 2035.
The subject land is council owned – community land and comprises the former oval area, concrete pitch and small clubrooms.
The proposal is to add the subject land to the existing lease where the Beachport Golf Club would be responsible for all operating expenses and maintenance associated for the term of the existing lease period.
The closing date for public comment is November 20.
