Community boosts firework funds

Crowd funding is again been used this year to meet the $15,000 cost of staging the traditional New Years Eve fireworks display at Beachport to welcome in 2024.

Online donations via GoFundMe were successfully used a year ago and this fundraising tool is being used by the Beachport District Development Association.

It engages contractors each year to set off fireworks from the jetty at mid-evening and midnight and they light up Rivoli Bay in spectacular fashion.

Wattle Range Council provides a grant each year and the BDDA has some funds of its own but there remains a significant shortfall.

Within a week of launching the online appeal, donations have come forward including one anonymous contribution of $1000.

The appeal has been endorsed by BDDA secretary Ros Brown.

“As a community-based volunteer group we are proud to bring this much-loved local event to the community and visitors to our gorgeous little coastal town,” Ms Brown said.

“All money raised is spent on brining this event to Beachport.”

Meanwhile, in other Beachport festive season news, the township’s extended temporary alcohol-free zones have become law as they have just been published in the Government Gazette.

The extended area takes in the foreshore for the second consecutive festive season and follows a successful application to the State Government by Wattle Range Council under the Liquor Licensing Act.
