Strong community spirit is evident in Millicent every Thursday when volunteers brew donated ingredients into a delicious soup.
After the soup is made at the Millicent RSL Hall it is divided into 40 serves.
The newly-formed Millicent Shares a Plate group then takes the soup and donated bread rolls for distribution to those in need at the Millicent IGA supermarket.
Millicent Shares a Plate was formed three months ago and comprises dozens of volunteers from Millicent and district who are arranged on a roster into five cooking teams of six.
This community outreach act by Millicent Shares a Plate is in addition to the 60 free meals which are provided each Monday night at the IGA supermarket by its manager and New Heaven restaurant chef Sukhi Dhaliwal.
Last week, the main ingredient in the soup was spinach donated by Holla-Fresh at Tantanoola.
When The SE Voice called at the Millicent RSL Hall, a strong sense of camaraderie was evident.
Among the volunteers is Jay Watson who knows much about catering through her role as long-serving manager of the canteen at Millicent High School.
“We are a group of like-minded people who saw a need,” Ms Watson said.
“We want to help those in the community who are vulnerable.
“I spoke to one local man who enjoyed the weekly serves of free soup.
“He had recently fallen on hard times and was most appreciative of our efforts.”
