Countdown on for charity match

The countdown is nearly over for charity football match ‘switch the headspace,’ which will take place at East Gambier Football Club tomorrow.

The twilight match aims to raise mental health awareness and event proceeds will be donated to headspace Mount Gambier.

A hard-working local committee, which includes Adam Todd, Adam Richards, Jesse Plunkett, Celeste and Shane Raymond, Aaron Davis, Matt Roscow and Luke Thomson, have organised the inaugural event.

Team Pale Ale, coached by Roscow, and Team Pacific Ale, coached by Thomson, will go head-to-head, with ex-AFL stars, local celebrities and young guns ready to run out onto the grounds.

“It is such a diverse group of people, from people that play footy, have played footy and have not, there are so many different people so I think it will be exciting for everyone to watch,” Plunkett said.

“The teams are looking very even which makes it even better, it is looking good, it is looking like we have some really juicy match-ups there which is nice,” Roscow said.

“I am really looking forward to the fun that is going to be had, I think that when you strip footy back, if you play probably any level at senior level it becomes very serious and very monotonous, this is probably the first time really for me, personally, that footy is going to become something to do for fun.

“It is going to have that real child-like element to it, so that is something I am really looking forward to, having a kick and a catch and a laugh.

“So that is something I am definitely looking forward to, the banter is going to be unreal.”

Roscow said he was experiencing nervous energy along with excitement and thanked everyone for all their support, which he said was humbling.

The event is all-ages and all-inclusive and people are travelling from near and far to attend, including Adelaide, Portland, Casterton, Melbourne and Port Lincoln.

“There is something for everybody, I think that is the key thing, come, talk to people, reach out if you need to reach out, and I probably cannot say that enough, just keep the conversation going,” Roscow said.

Gates open at 4.30pm and pre-game formalities commence at 6pm, with a Welcome to Country, a minute’s silence and the committee will speak about mental health.

Happy hour will run from 4.30pm until 5.30pm and the four-quarter football match will finish around 8pm, followed by an auction with exciting items.

Local musician Ben Hood will provide live music, various mental health and wellbeing services will set up stalls and there will be raffles throughout the evening.

“We have had some generous donations from businesses and individuals throughout the Limestone Coast and further, we are all just grateful for the community involvement,” Thomson said.

The committee members hoped conversations about mental health would continue long after the event.

“I think it is important to not forget about what we are doing after the event is done, we are doing the event so the conversation continues long after, so if that just sticks with everyone then that is what we are after,” Plunkett said.

“The message is being passed along, so no matter how many people come through the gates now the conversations have been had and are being had more regularly, so I think that is really good,” Roscow said.

“It serves its purpose without even kicking a footy, the amount of people that have come up and talked about the footy game but also the meaning behind it,” Thomson said.

“If what we have organised has already started to open that conversation then Friday is going to be an absolute bonus.”

Entry is $10 and under 16s enter with a gold coin donation.

Eftpos will be available at the gate and the Davison Street side gate will also be open as a cash only gate.

The event is fully catered, strictly no BYO.

The committee encouraged people to arrive early and bring a $10 note if possible to help the gate run smoothly.
