Court puts brakes on illegal drivers

Anumber of defendants charged with driving offences appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court before Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos last week.

A Limestone Coast man appeared via phone and was convicted of drug driving after being drug tested by police on March 13 around 4.30pm and returning a positive result to methamphetamine.

It was the defendant’s second offence as he had committed a prior drug driving offence on March 9, 2020 and as such was issued with a $900 fine and a licence disqualification totalling 12 months.

A 33-year-old Mount Gambier man faced the court in custody and was convicted of driving unauthorised after a drug driving disqualification among five other charges.

The court heard the defendant was arrested by police after he was discovered driving on Pick Avenue at 11am on April 22 while his licence was disqualified.

The man was convicted and issued with a three year licence disqualification to commence following his release from prison.

A Limestone Coast woman was convicted of driving with cannabis in her oral fluid and consequently contravening a condition of her probationary licence after being pulled over and drug tested by police at 1pm on March 13 on Percy Street.

The defendant was issued with a licence disqualification totalling six months.
