Cricket club calls players to crease

The South East Coasters Veterans Cricket Club has issued a call for new players to bolster its ranks.

The South East Coasters Cricket Club (SEC) is a member of the SA Veterans Cricket Association which manages Over 40, 50, 60 and 70 cricket competitions in South Australia.

Over the last 10 years it has been a pioneer team in over age cricket in Australia.

SEC has one team which competes in the Over 60s Tanner Shield competition playing mostly against Adelaide based teams, with home games played at Penola.

The team participates in multi day carnivals in the South East, in the Riverland and at Echuca/Moama.

A number of SEC players compete at Over 70s level at national carnivals including Division 1 standard.

The current playing group is drawn from the wider South East region with many local players achieving South Australian or Australian representation, including the 2019 SA team which won the national champions.

Following some fine performances at last year’s nationals in Geelong, Furner’s Dale Bateman has been selected in the Australian Over 60s team to tour the UK next month.

He will be playing in a test series against the English Over 60s team, one of the matches will be played at Edgbaston, the venue of the first test of the forthcoming Ashes series.

Other notable players include Phil Verco (Padthaway), Neil Perry (Mundulla), Max Arney and Phil Dohnt (Penola), Tim Valente (Robe), Tony Legoe (Lucindale), Chris Cother (Frances), Colin Murdoch, Gary Ashby, Grant Humphries, Butch Muhovics, Steve Bell, Michael Young, Hayden Smith and Kevin Smith (Lower South East).
