Cricketers off to the west coast

Two local cricketers are set to head to Perth to represent South Australia in the over 40s Australian Titles.

Robbie Drenthen, who locally plays for South Gambier in A Grade, has been once again selected to play for SA against other Australian states in WA next week.

He will be joined in WA by Gambier Centrals B grader Josh Thompson, who also plays T20 for South.

The pair’s first game will be against Victoria followed by a match against the hosts Western Australia, before taking on NSW.

South Australia will then progress based on ladder positions.

Drenthen said he is likely to be batting down the bottom of the order as well as likely to open the bowling like last year.

He said he enjoyed playing representative cricket as well as taking the field with some of the state’s top cricketers.

“I love it, I obviously went away last year and played in Brisbane and you just look around at some of the players that you’re playing alongside that you have known or heard about for so long and see why they are so good,” he said.

“The guys who play for South Australia are a great bunch of blokes with the overall event being really competitive and taken very seriously but it’s also very enjoyable.”

Drenthen believes the SA side should perform well this year, given how they went last year, with the side remaining similar – if not better.

“We were not far away last year and our side this year is probably slightly better I think so hopefully we go well,” he said.

“But you just never know which is like any game of cricket but we’re a pretty balanced side.”

Drenthen is most looking forward to heading away and experiencing it all with his good friend and local cricketer Thompson.

“Just going away really, with my great mate Josh Thomson who’s also playing,” he said.

“I have played a lot of cricket with Josh so to go away and share the experience and just generally playing cricket and not being at work.”
