Cycling stalwart honoured

One of Mount Gambier’s most well known cycling stalwarts has been recognised for more than 70 years of dedication to the sport.

Allan Dowdell’s commitment to local cycling was acknowledged with the Blue Lake Velodrome named in his honour.

Last week members and friends of the Mount Gambier Cycling Club, together with representatives of the Dowdell Family, Lions Club of Mt Gambier, and Mr Dowdell himself, gathered at the velodrome for the unveiling of the new track signage in Allan’s honour.

Mr Dowdell has been a key contributor to the Mount Gambier Cycling Club for more than 70 years, and it seemed fitting to the current committee to recognise his efforts and value to the club community by honouring him with the naming of the Allan Dowdell Velodrome in his honour.

The sign sits prominently on the northern side of the velodrome, easily seen by those sitting in the stands, and after a few words from club president Damian Buckley and Mr Dowdell, those present were allowed onto the track to view the signage from a closer vantage point.

Following the formalities, all present were invited to stay and enjoy a sausage sizzle while the riders from the Limestone Coast Cycling Academy were put through their paces by their coaches.

The riders were also given the opportunity to speak with Mr Dowdell and share their recent successes at the State Track Championships held in Adelaide.
