DeJong reflects on dream run

West Gambier is back on top of the Dycer Constructions Big Bash world and could not have done it in more emphatic fashion.

The Roos blitzed through the group stages knocking over their opponents for sub-100 scores in all three games before executing another demolition job in the semi-final against Mil Lel.

Sunday afternoon’s final against Penola proved to be West’s toughest task of the T20 season, but thanks to the exploits of Sam Willis, Bray Stephenson, Kyal Chapman and Justin DeJong, the reigning premiers were overcome in convincing fashion.

For first-time Roos’ skipper DeJong, it was a dream run to the flag and he was pinching himself when holding the spoils of victory.

“The team has been great the entire competition,” he said.

“They had my back throughout and I could have asked a number of them if I had any issues.

“A lot of players have been coming out at training and putting in the time, so to get the rewards is great.”

DeJong said the most pleasing aspect was the squad effort to get the job done after West had to overcome the setback of missing the services of key batters Connor Prior and Jake Blackwell, who were caught in a outbreak of COVID days before the final.

The captain also admitted the final was easily the most stressful assignment of the campaign, but the coolness of Willis and Stephenson at the end sealed the deal.

“We are very lucky with the depth we have because we missed some great players, but the group just stuck to their guns,” he said

“In the first few overs of the game I was quite stressed because it was the first time a team got going.

“I had faith in our bowlers and fielders to step up, so I was not too worried, but I never expected to be chasing 125.

“Then the low-risk batting from Sam and Bray was great because they punished the bad balls to get us over the line.”
