Disc golfers take on nation

Mount Gambier Disc Golf had members compete across the country over the weekend.

Locally, players braved the conditions on Sunday morning to compete in the November League Day.

In the open division Justin Clarke claimed first place with a score of 3 under par (61) over Mick Wilson and Curtis King on 1 under.

Andrew Young-Jackway claimed the men’s competition honours with a score of 1 over par to beat Aaron Price on 3 over par.

In the Ladies, Amy Weyers had a victory over Tayla Clarke.

But encouragingly for Clarke she claimed the handicap for the combined men’s and ladies shooting a personal best despite the conditions.

Henry Kerin was the junior division winner and despite not having the best day on the scorecard, Darryl Pearson won the combined closest to pin.

Across the country in contrasting conditions, eight members of Mount Gambier Disc Golf proudly represented the club at the 2022 Australian Disc Golf Championships.

Highlights for the weekend included club member Ryan Nicholson and Victorian player Lee Thompson teaming up to take on the pairs championship, finishing second in a playoff for their division.

In the junior female division Jessica Holman fought back to finish three shots behind winner Anita Weber, in a reversal of fortunes from their last encounter at Mount Gambier.

Nicole McPherson started the final round tied for first, but ultimately shrugged of her competition to claim the FA4 win, with Michelle Schulz finishing third in the same division.

In the FA2 division there were three players who were in the mix, local Kate Eldridge went into the final round seven shots behind the leader and after a see-saw battle ultimately secured victory in a playoff.

This was a fantastic result for Eldridge who has been competing for five years and has shown dramatic improvement in the last six months.

Mount Gambier Disc Golf will now turn its attention to the Aussie Disc Golf Day with registrations now open for the event on December 4.

Meanwhile, the local club will host international disc golfer Scott Stokely and his Disc Golf Method group clinic on November 29.

This will be an amazing opportunity to learn from an ‘OG’ American Pro.
